More about the CDMA Network closure

Telecom CDMA Closure Announcement

On 31 July 2012 we are closing the old CDMA Mobile Network. This means that if you have a mobile device that uses our old CDMA Mobile Network it will no longer be able to receive or make calls and texts or use data after 31 July 2012. This is notice that your contract with Telecom relating to the old CDMA Network will terminate on 31 July 2012 or earlier in accordance with the terms of your CDMA contract. Your CDMA mobile device will continue to work normally until this time.

Why are we closing this service?

We are closing CDMA because our customers can now get a better mobile experience on the XT network – over 1 million Kiwis are already enjoying it. XT is a 3G Network that gives you wider choice of leading brand handsets, seamless roaming experiences, and coverage in 97% of the places that kiwis work and live. In order for us to keep XT at the leading edge, we need to focus our investment and other activity on XT, which means closing the older CDMA Network.

What does this mean for you?

You will need to get a new mobile device and XT plan to connect to the XT network. XT plans have all been designed with our understanding of how New Zealanders want to use their mobile phones - both now and in the future. From Value Packs for our Prepaid customers to Smartphone specific plans for our Postpaid customers - we have something to suit your needs.

All our CDMA customers will be able to take advantage of exclusive handset deals in recognition of their commitment and loyalty to Telecom. In some cases (Postpaid and business) handsets will be at no upfront cost (conditions apply).

Wherever possible we will be contacting all of our customers at least once during this 12 month period to tell them about the offers available to them and the step by step guide for moving to XT.

Prepaid CDMA Customers

If you are currently using a mobile device that is connected to a Prepaid plan on our old CDMA Mobile Network, your credit will expire on 31 July 2012 when the network closes. However, you can transfer your credit and mobile number to a new Telecom XT mobile device when you upgrade before 31 July 2012. Alternatively you can port your number to another mobile provider by 31 July 2012.

Connections to the CDMA Mobile Network

We are giving our customers 30 days notice that from 1 August 2011 Telecom will no longer be connecting any devices to the old CDMA Mobile Network.

Connections could be allowed in exceptional circumstances such as medical or emergency situations. You should call 123 to talk through this option.

Changes to CDMA Prepaid Terms & Conditions

From 1 August 2011 the Telecom Mobile Prepaid Agreement for CDMA customers will be amended as follows:

  • Any CDMA Prepaid customer who has not used their CDMA Prepaid mobile phone at least once in the last 24 months as at 1 September 2011 will have their CDMA Prepaid service disconnected from this date. Any remaining credit will expire, your agreement with us will end and the phone number allocated to that phone will be lost. This will only occur if there is no inbound or outbound activity on the Prepaid mobile phone and no top-up activity. If you use your CDMA Prepaid mobile device before 1 September 2011, it will not be disconnected until the closure of the old CDMA Mobile Network on 31 July 2012 or earlier in accordance with your current CDMA contract.
  • Any unused credit on all other CDMA prepaid mobiles will expire on 31 July 2012 or can be transferred to a new Telecom XT mobile if you upgrade before this date.
  • Your CDMA mobile number will also be lost on 31 July 2012 unless it is transferred to a new Telecom XT mobile or a mobile phone with another provider. If your CDMA mobile number is listed and not transferred as above, Telecom may remove the number from the next telephone book.

Telecom will be in touch with its CDMA customers to help move them across to XT so they can stay connected with Telecom.
